Michaela Sheets was born with a cleft palate and endured the highs and lows of the social experience common to most of our Craniofacial Clinic patients during her youth. Those experiences together with her passion for children led her to join our team as a Patient Advocate in 2014. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in 2011 from the University of Florida with a minor in Family, Youth, and Community Sciences, and is currently developing an anti-bullying program for the clinic. Foremost in her programming is a teleconferencing mentoring program for patients who might live too far from the Gainesville office to visit in person.
During the weekly clinic, Ms. Sheets speaks with patients and families about bullying and other social concerns. Her specific desire for the clinic’s patients is for every patient to be well socialized and have a strong sense of self-esteem. She has a heart for the whole family and also offers resources about bullying and identity development to parents with concerns.
